How Do Authors Make Money from Kindle Unlimited and Audible's All You Can Listen?

One question I see quite often is:

"If I read a book on Kindle Unlimited or listen through Audible's All You Can Listen, does the author still get paid?"

The short answer is yes.

The slightly longer answer is yes... but probably not as much as you think.

When you buy an eBook outright, an author receives a royalty from that sale. However, when you read a book through Kindle Unlimited (KU), authors aren't paid per download, they're paid based on how many pages readers actually read.

The amount varies from month to month, but as a rough guide, an author may receive around half a penny per page read. For many books, that works out to somewhere between £1 and £2 if a reader finishes the entire book, or if the book is short, even less.

How Do Authors Make Money from Kindle Unlimited and Audible's All You Can Listen?

Audible's new All You Can Listen (AYCL) programme works in a similar way. Rather than readers purchasing individual audiobooks, authors are paid from a shared subscription pool based on listener engagement. The exact calculation is more complex, but the principle is the same: listening matters.

What does this mean for readers?

It means that if you borrow a book through Kindle Unlimited or listen through AYCL, you're still supporting the author. In fact, finishing a book can often be more valuable than simply downloading it and never getting around to reading it.

For independent authors especially, every page read, every hour listened, every review left, and every recommendation made to a friend genuinely helps.

Many readers assume that because they're not buying the book directly, the author receives nothing. Thankfully, that's not the case. Authors do get paid, but the payments are often surprisingly small, which is why visibility and word of mouth remain so important.

So if you enjoy a book you've borrowed through Kindle Unlimited or listened to through AYCL, one of the best things you can do is:

  • Finish the book (if you enjoy it!)

  • Leave a review

  • Tell a friend

  • Recommend it online

  • Borrow another book by the same author

Those actions make a bigger difference than most readers realise.

The reality is that very few authors become overnight bestsellers. Most of us build our careers one reader, one review, and one recommendation at a time. And for that, we're incredibly grateful.

If you'd like to support an indie author, take a look at some of these short books by independent authors, some of which are available on Amazon's Kindle Unlimited and All You Can Listen platforms.
