Why I didn't give Seven Sins a big launch

A few people have asked me why I didn't push Seven Sins as much as I did The Colours of Denial or If They Knew. It's a good question and I'll tell you why.

When I launched Seven Sins, we were deep into the early stages of the pandemic. No one knew what was happening and why it was happening. Our lives were changing; the way we shopped, worked, spent time with friends and family...

Across the globe statistics were being revealed on a daily basis regarding the number of deaths and as a result, the world came to a standstill.

Whilst there were still so many other authors, businesses, producers, film makers etc. releasing books, products, music and films during this time, for me, it didn't feel right to push Seven Sins given the nature of the book.

For many people, including me, reading is an escape that teleports us to someplace else. It's supposed to take us away from the realities of this life so that we can immerse ourselves into something else.

I've been told that Seven Sins is 'raw,' 'brutally honest,' and 'so deep' and I really don't think it would have been a positive escape for anyone during the pandemic. Even now, I'd say that you'd have to have an acquired taste for this type of novel, because there's a lot of darkness in Seven Sins and so much of it focuses on regret, death and being alone.

Seven Sins takes readers on a journey through the mind of my character, Kai Jackson - a bread-winner, family man, a killer. It's an action-crime thriller that is predominantly set in a hospital where the protagonist, Kai, recalls the memories of his murderous, gruesome past and the mistakes he made as he approaches his final days, alone, while waiting every single day for his family to come to visit him.

And I couldn't do it. The thought of people being in hospital during Covid, suffering alone with only their thoughts instead of their families made me feel sick. Had anyone picked up my book having had a loved one facing the same fate as Kai, well, I didn't want to be that person to make someone feel this void as though they weren't going through enough of that already.

So I quietly hit the publish button and sent out a couple of Instagram posts to tell my readers that it was out, and let it trickle away in the background, until now.

Now, I'm working on book 2 of the series again. It's been an on and off journey with this series, like a love / hate relationship because it was a difficult one to write. I mentally forced myself down a dark path to place myself in Kai's shoes and now I'm doing it all over again to give you books 2 & 3.
