Is Listening to an Audiobook Just as Effective as Reading?

A question that I've heard countless times and have even asked myself in the past is:

"Do audiobooks count as reading?"

The short answer is yes, I would say so.

Whether you're curled up with a paperback, reading on your Kindle, or listening through Audible on your morning commute, you're still experiencing the same story. You're following the plot, getting to know the characters, solving the mystery, and (hopefully!) gasping at the twists.

The format may be different, but the story is the same.

Is listening to an audiobook as good as reading?

Research suggests that for most adults, listening to an audiobook and reading the same book activate many of the same areas of the brain. While everyone's experience is different, both formats help with comprehension, imagination, vocabulary, and emotional engagement.

Some people absorb information better by reading with their eyes. Others find listening helps them concentrate, especially when they're walking, driving, or doing household chores.

There isn't a right or wrong way to enjoy a book, only the way that works best for you.

Are thrillers good as audiobooks?

As someone who writes domestic thrillers and psychological suspense, I might be a little biased here... but I genuinely think thrillers are one of the best genres to experience as an audiobook outside of non-fiction.

A talented narrator can add another layer of tension to the story. They can pause before a plot twist is revealed, change the tone during a confrontation and create subtle differences between characters' voices.

Laura Cox, the narrator of my domestic thriller, Liar, Liar has done a phenomenal job in doing just that. You can watch a video snippet of Laura recording the Liar, Liar audiobook here when it's ready.

When the narration is as immersive as this, it goes way beyond someone just reading a book. In fact, it feels more like you're living inside that world.

Why are more readers choosing audiobooks?

Audiobooks have made reading more accessible than ever.

They allow people to enjoy books while they're driving to work, walking the dog, exercising, cooking, travelling, or simply just relaxing at home.

For many people, audiobooks mean they can fit more books into their lives without finding extra hours in the day.

Do audiobooks count towards reading goals?

I used to ask myself this all the time. The answer? Well, in short, absolutely.

Whether your goal is to read twelve books this year or one hundred, an audiobook still introduces you to new ideas, memorable characters, and unforgettable plots.

Reading isn't a competition, but rather about enjoying the journey.
