How to overcome a reading slump

An open book at a coffee shop.

We've all experienced periods when picking up a book feels like an overwhelming task, and sometimes, it can leave us feeling disconnected from the world of books we know so well.

As much as I love books, reading (and writing) slumps are far too common for me. If you're the same, these tips may help you overcome a slump.

Accept and embrace the slump:

The first step in overcoming a reading slump is to accept that it's a natural part of the reading journey. It's okay to have periods when reading feels challenging or unappealing. Embrace the slump as an opportunity for self-reflection and a chance to explore other interests. In this busy world, I no longer force it upon me. The love for reading will return when the time is right.

Set realistic reading goals:

I have to put my hand up to having continuously set myself unrealistic reading goals in the past, and then secretly stressing about not being close to meeting them. During a reading slump, setting unrealistic reading goals can add unnecessary pressure and further dampen your motivation. Instead, set small, achievable goals that align with your current reading capacity. Start with shorter books, novellas, or even engaging short stories to build momentum. Gradually increase the reading load as your enthusiasm returns.

Diversify your reading selection:

Sometimes, a reading slump occurs because we find ourselves stuck in a genre or reading rut. Break free from the monotony by exploring different genres, authors, or formats. Try genres you haven't delved into before, pick up a non-fiction book on a topic of interest, or opt for an audiobook to switch up your reading experience. Variety can reignite your curiosity and open doors to new literary adventures. This works well for me. I listened to "His & Hers" by Alice Feeney, on Audible during a slump and it got be back up and running. Moving into a different genre between thrillers also works well for me. I dive into warming, cosy reads by authors like Fredrik Backman. And there are always non-fiction books on writing that I enjoy too.

Create a reading routine:

I've always failed at establishing a reading routine, because my routine is all over the place, and is very flaky. Whilst this doesn't work for me, I know that it does for others, so I will include creating a reading routine as another point. A consistent reading routine can help rekindle your reading habit. Set aside dedicated time each day or week for reading, creating a sacred space where you can immerse yourself in a book. Disconnect from distractions, whether it's turning off your phone or finding a quiet corner in a cozy environment. Building a reading routine will help make reading a cherished part of your day.

Join a book club or reading community:

Engaging with other readers can provide the motivation and inspiration needed to overcome a reading slump. Join a book club, whether in-person or online, to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for books. Discussing books, sharing recommendations, and participating in lively conversations can reignite your enthusiasm and introduce you to new perspectives and genres.

Read short stories or anthologies:

If diving into a lengthy novel feels overwhelming, try exploring short stories or anthologies. These bite-sized delights offer complete narratives in a condensed format, allowing you to enjoy a full story in a shorter timeframe. Short stories can reignite your love for storytelling and help you rediscover the joy of reading without the commitment of a longer book.

Take a break and explore other interests:

Sometimes, the best way to overcome a reading slump is to take a temporary break from reading altogether. Use this time to explore other hobbies, such as painting, gardening, or hiking. Engaging in diverse activities can reignite your creative spirit and inspire you to return to books with a fresh perspective. I recently discovered a new love for house plants by exploring other interests.

Visit bookstores and libraries:

A trip to a local bookstore or library can reignite your passion for reading. Browse the shelves, explore new releases, and engage with staff who are enthusiastic about books. Surrounding yourself with the literary atmosphere and being surrounded by books can spark the desire to dive back into reading.

Set aside distractions:

In today's digital age, distractions are abundant and can easily contribute to a reading slump. Identify and minimise potential distractions, such as social media notifications, excessive screen time, or busy environments. Find a peaceful space where you can focus solely on the book in front of you, allowing yourself to fully immerse in its world.

Be kind to yourself:

Lastly, be patient and kind to yourself during a reading slump. Avoid self-judgment or guilt for not reading as much as you'd like. Remember that reading is a personal journey, and each reader goes through ups and downs. Trust that your love for books will return in its own time, and in the meantime, embrace the other aspects of your life.

Overcoming a reading slump is a personal journey that requires patience, exploration, and self-compassion. By accepting the slump, diversifying your reading choices, creating a routine, engaging with book communities, and allowing yourself breaks, you can rediscover the joy of reading and reignite your passion for literature. Embrace this opportunity for growth, and soon enough, you'll find yourself immersed in books once again.
